Perforation Solutions for Medical Applications
Solutions for medical applications. Substrates for the skin-contact layer for absorbent pads and bandages range from simpler structures such as Polyester or Polypropylene mounted to an absorbent pad, to more sophisticated approaches. These include tapes equipped with pressure-sensitive acrylic or silicone adhesive surfaces. These barrier-like layers can be perforated to allow exudate from the wound to be absorbed in the backing pad while maintaining wound-site conditions that favor rapid healing.
Absorbent Wound Dressings, Pads & Bandages
Thermal perforation can produce extremely dense, uniform hole patterns in flexible films such as polyester and polypropylene. These perforated films can be bonded to absorbent pads or gauze to form the skin-contact layer of a wound dressing, allowing fluid to pass through the film into the absorbent material.
Perftech offers a range of available perforation patterns and can help determine the appropriate porosity for the application. Because thermal perforation is a non-contact process, it provides uniform, repeatable perforation while minimizing the potential for process-related contamination.
Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Wound Dressings
Advanced wound dressings often incorporate pressure-sensitive acrylic or silicone adhesives to provide secure skin contact while allowing removal when required. These tacky adhesive constructions can be challenging to perforate consistently using conventional methods.
Perftech uses both hot-needle and laser technologies to perforate through the film and pressure-sensitive adhesive layers. Laser processing can also drill, cut or score selected adhesive constructions, allowing porosity, hole size and opening patterns to be tailored to the requirements of the wound-dressing application.
